Vallarta Strengthens Flood Prevention and Water Supply Amid Drought

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Even in the face of an ongoing drought, Puerto Vallarta is taking decisive steps to prepare for the upcoming rainy and hurricane season. The city’s Public Works Department has launched an extensive cleaning and desilting campaign across rivers, streams, and canals to prevent future flooding that could threaten homes and public safety.

By taking advantage of the current dry conditions, city crews are able to access and clear out waterways more efficiently, achieving an estimated 30% savings in operating costs. These savings come from better coordination of labor and machinery, which allows for more work to be done with fewer resources.

Work is currently underway in several key areas, including Avenida México, Avenida de Las Palmas near the bus station, La Floresta, Ixtapa’s Tamarindos, El Contentillo in Loma Bonita, the Luis Donaldo Colosio Bypass, Sendero de Luna, the Pitillal River, and around the University Center of the Coast. These efforts are all aimed at ensuring a clear path for water to flow freely when the rains arrive.

At the same time, Mayor Luis Munguía has directed SEAPAL Vallarta to address the water supply challenges caused by the drought. One major improvement includes the rehabilitation of Well 26 “A” in the Las Gaviotas neighborhood. After maintenance on the pump and its electromechanical systems, water output increased from 12 to 20 liters per second, improving supply to neighborhoods in the city’s northern sector.

Under the leadership of SEAPAL director Carlos Ruiz, more measures are planned to boost water service reliability. Residents are also encouraged to use water wisely and to invest in storage solutions like cisterns and tanks to be better prepared for any shortages.

Puerto Vallarta’s proactive approach is helping the city stay ahead of both drought and flooding risks – ensuring stronger infrastructure and better protection for everyone.
