April News from Puerto Vallarta’s PuRR Project Shelter

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The latest news from PuRR Project, a non-profit, no-kill feline shelter just north of Puerto Vallarta that provides homeless cats and kittens a recuperative stay with the ultimate goal of adopting them out to loving homes sterilized, vaccinated and disease free.

Kitty Bingo: You’ll have two opportunities in April to join us for a Wednesday afternoon of BINGO at Nacho Daddy on the 10th and the 24th. We’ve got a lot of really nice prizes for winners plus the 50/50 Raffle! Cards go on sale at 3:30 and games start at 4:00. So grab a friend and come on down for some fun while supporting the cats and kittens at the PuRR Shelter!

Saturday Market: We’re just outside Daiquiri Dick’s every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Our popular logo T-shirts in both men’s & women’s sizes and different colors and styles to choose from make amazing gifts! We also have caps, Kitty Dishes, Towels, drink holders, kitty ears and our new hand-painted coffee mugs! Or maybe you just need to pet a kitten! So stop by and say “Hello” to our volunteers.

Garage Sale: A lot of folks have asked when we plan to have another Garage Sale. Our next planned one is not until Fall but if you have items to donate we can take them anytime! Contact Linda at info(at)purrproject.com for more information, where to deliver your donations, or what you need picked up.

We’ve been doing some Spring cleaning and necessary painting. Dra. Eva was thrilled with the top-to-bottom cleaning and repainting of the shelter clinic! So far this year, we have taken in 43 cats and kittens and had a great total of 35 adoptions! Most of those were at PetCo but also from shelter visitors or through our volunteers. Unfortunately, there are still 71 kittens in the shelter nurseries who would love to find that Forever Home. We will continue to bring adoptable kitties to the PetCo Adoption Center every weekend if you want to come meet your new furry friend.

In February we talked about some of our special needs kitties that need special homes. Well Lucky Penny found hers with fosters Catherine Goglia and Jim Shoemaker! Catherine writes: “Penny really is a miracle who teaches me something every day. She is fearless and there is nothing that stops her from trying something new. She just bounces back and tries a different way if it doesn’t work the first time. One of our other fosters, Alba, has learned that when she plays with Penny if she makes noise Penny will find her. They love playing in the crinkle tunnel and when Penny cannot find Alba then Alba will head back to the tunnel and make noise for Penny to follow. The adaptability, wisdom and empathy these kittens display with Penny is something I cannot help but wish we as humans displayed more of in our daily lives.”

We’ve said it before… Virtual Adoption is a purr-fect way to “adopt” a cat if your husband has allergies, you don’t want to clean a litter box, your condo doesn’t allow pets or you already have a dozen cats at home! It also makes a great gift for a cat-loving friend or family member! It’s only a $120 donation and can be done right on our website.

We are always in awe of Dra. Eva Torres! She not only works full time at Sabueso’s Clinic, she visits the shelter twice a week and still finds time to volunteer her services when she is called by local authorities to help an animal in distress. Recently she was the vet called to help find a cause for three baby whale deaths in the Bay of Banderas. She was also a featured presenter on the first congress on crocodiles in Mexico. And kids LOVE when she brings an iguana or her 10-year old pet python, Chabola, to visit them in the classroom!

We all send a very BIG thanks to Sasha Brannum and her new kitty Proseco for their generous donation! Same to Rita and Greg Tomlin who adopted Mama Carmen and Duncan! Plus we received donations from Beverly Cairns, Nina Vellani, Karen & Walt Trolson, Shirley Robertson and Hilary & Michael Nau (for Catherine & Jim Shoemaker).

As always, we are grateful for those monthly donors who are so essential to our success: Terri & Gray Levy, The McCullough Family Gift Fund, Gary Phillips, Sharon & Ken Rose, Joanne Bryla, Trisha Aljoe, Pat & Sandy Glenn, Catherine Goglia & Jim Shoemaker, Jerry Petrizzo, Heidi Benedict, Timothy Oleno, Larry Sherwood, Mary & Bob Fitzgerald, Robert Weed, David Flannery, Elizabeth Fuerherm, Janice North and David Flannery.
