Authorities Confirm Welfare of Animals at Puerto Vallarta Zoo

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In a show of cooperative commitment to wildlife welfare, officials from the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Government conducted a comprehensive visit to the Zoológico de Vallarta (Vallarta Zoo). This action came in direct response to requests from various animal rights organizations and concerned citizens, demonstrating the local government’s responsiveness to community interests.

The visit served to supervise the condition of the zoo’s facilities and, most importantly, the well-being of the animals under its care. This local inspection follows a recent, thorough assessment by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA). Aligning with the federal agency’s findings, municipal authorities confirmed that the animals are indeed in good condition and receiving proper care.

Among the attending officials were Dr. Bartolo Cruz Romero, head of the Environmental Sustainability Department; Dr. Vincent O’Halloran Lepe, Sustainable City Territory Manager; and Juan Carlos Peralta, head of the Communications Department. The supervisory team’s itinerary included a complete tour of the grounds, careful observation of the animal habitats, and constructive discussions with the zoo’s management, veterinary, and cleaning staff.

Following the inspection, the municipal authorities and the zoo’s leadership agreed to promote a collaboration strategy aimed at enhancing communication about wildlife care and rescue, expanding native flora protection areas, and encouraging youth participation in environmental education and biodiversity programs.

A key focus of this joint effort will be reinforcing the zoo’s participation in the conservation of the Mexican Box Turtle and the ongoing protection of crocodiles within Puerto Vallarta. The importance of the facility’s role in rescue operations was underscored by reports from both PROFEPA and Zoológico de Vallarta, confirming that more than 60% of the animals currently residing at the facility were rescued in operations carried out by the federal authority.

Zoo management highlighted that the Vallarta Zoo functions not only as a tourist attraction but also as a sanctuary for rescued wildlife. Each animal receives specialized medical care in accordance with national legislation and the protocols established by the Association of Zoos, Breeders and Aquariums of Mexico (AZCARM).

The zoo’s administration encourages residents and visitors to support their ongoing conservation efforts by visiting the facilities, helping sustain programs dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of Mexico’s diverse wildlife.

Zoológico de Vallarta, located just south of Puerto Vallarta in the jungles of Mismaloya at Cam. Al Edén 700, is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, call (322) 228-0501, or visit ZoologicoDeVallarta.com.
