Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Bay of Banderas is home to a variety of open-air markets stretching across Jalisco and Nayarit. These weekly gatherings showcase the region’s rich heritage through handcrafted goods, organic produce, and regional culinary specialties. For residents, seasonal visitors, and travelers, exploring these stalls offers an authentic way to connect with local artisans and producers.
Thursday evenings in Puerto Vallarta feature a transformation along the Marina Malecón during the Marina Vallarta Art & Market. Operating from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, this event fills the promenade with nearly 200 vendors displaying artisanal jewelry, organic produce, freshly baked bread, and custom clothing. Live musical acts and street performances entertain shoppers as they browse the stalls alongside the water.
Morning market enthusiasts have several options as the weekend approaches. Expanding the region’s market scene, the relatively new Vallarta Market celebrates this season’s Grand Opening on Friday, November 6, at 9:45 am. Located on the esplanade of the Agustín Flores Contreras Sports Complex across from the Sheraton Hotel, the launch features live mariachi music by Los Galleros alongside more than 50 vendors offering authentic Mexican crafts, accessories, and local dishes. Following its debut, the market operates every Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm through April.

Further up the coast in Nayarit, Friday mornings also bring life to Sayulita’s Mercado del Pueblo. Known for reflecting the eco-conscious and relaxed mood of the surf town, this market emphasizes sustainability with natural skincare products, handmade clothing, and organic produce. Visitors frequently stop by for local honey and artisanal chocolate to take home.
Saturdays host a wider array of neighborhood gatherings across the bay. In Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romántica, the Olas Altas Farmers Market runs from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. It attracts visitors seeking farm-fresh ingredients, gourmet chocolates, handmade pottery, and specialty cheeses. Strolling through the venue with freshly squeezed juice or warm carnitas in hand, shoppers can listen to live music while exploring organic offerings.
A short distance away on the Cuale Island near the Cultural Center, the Three Hens and a Rooster Market is held every Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The island venue provides a peaceful setting for expats, seasonal residents, and visitors to meet local creators selling artwork, unique jewelry & accessories and small-batch food items.

For those interested in a bargain and an authentic neighborhood setting, the Saturday Market in Barrio Santa Maria offers a different atmosphere. Set up along cobblestone streets near the CFE service center, vendors sell pre-owned clothing, electronics, al pastor tacos, and refreshing aguas frescas, with friendly price negotiation serving as part of the experience.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, Nayarit – affectionately known as San Pancho – the Mercado Artesanal San Pancho opens on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm to display beach-inspired decor, handmade jewelry, and organic treats. Fueled by live acoustic music and enthusiastic regional creators, the gathering highlights the tight-knit community spirit of the town.
For a unique Sunday morning experience, stop by the La Cruz Market, located by the marina in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, just north of Puerto Vallarta. Against a backdrop of boats and blue waters, you can browse stalls offering fresh seafood, homemade baked goods, and locally crafted art from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The market is known for its variety and scenic views, making it a perfect spot to enjoy breakfast, shop for dinner ingredients, and pick up a few artisanal souvenirs.
Each market around Banderas Bay brings its own distinct character, creating a rich tapestry of local artistry, fresh flavors, and neighborhood traditions for anyone exploring the coast.
