Veracruz, Mexico – Bayer is moving forward with its major expansion plans in Mexico, recently announcing a significant investment to upgrade one of its key facilities in Veracruz. The company will be putting 800 million Mexican pesos, equivalent to $43 million USD, into its Orizaba-Ixtaczoquitlán plant. This move is part of a larger plan to strengthen its production and operations across the country over the next five years.
The investment is aimed at enhancing the facility’s ability to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients, especially steroid hormones. A substantial portion of the funds – 600 million pesos – will be dedicated to this area. The remaining 200 million pesos will go toward optimizing the facility’s pharmaceutical plant, which produces a variety of products including tablets, suppositories, and prefilled syringes. This funding will also help Bayer develop a new line of sterile hormonal injectables.
In addition to expanding production, the project will also focus on modernizing the infrastructure, laboratories, and systems at the Veracruz site. This update is a key part of Bayer’s commitment to improving its local production capabilities in Mexico, where it has operated for over a century. The company employs about 4,100 people across eight production sites, six research centers, and a corporate office in the country.
This Veracruz project follows an earlier announcement that Bayer would invest a total of 3 billion pesos in Mexico over the next five years. Besides the Veracruz plant, the company is also expanding a drug production site in Lerma.
With a strong presence in both pharmaceuticals and crop sciences, Bayer’s investments in Mexico are expected to benefit multiple areas of its business.
