Mexico City – Mexico’s tourism industry reached new heights in 2025, marking a year of record-breaking growth and a shift in how travelers experience the country. According to Minister of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez, international arrivals climbed by 5.8% between January and October, bringing approximately 38.4 million global visitors to Mexican shores and cities.
This upward trend reflects a growing international confidence in Mexico as a premier destination for both relaxation and exploration.
While the United States remains the primary source of tourism – accounting for 67.3% of all international visitors – the data reveals a diversifying global interest. Canadian travel saw an impressive 11.4% increase, while markets further abroad showed even sharper growth; arrivals from Italy rose by 14.8%, followed by South Korea at 11% and China at 10.6%. This influx is supported by expanded flight options and targeted promotional efforts that have successfully introduced Mexico’s various regions to a broader audience.
This surge in popularity is no longer confined to the famous coastal resorts that have long anchored the industry. Instead, travelers are increasingly venturing into the heart of the country to seek out authentic cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and diverse natural landscapes. This shift has encouraged the government to broaden its tourism strategy, highlighting the unique character of different states and moving beyond the traditional “sun-and-sand” model to include adventure and historical discovery.
The enthusiasm for travel is equally strong within the country’s own borders. Domestic tourism grew by 3.3% in 2025, with 92.6 million Mexican citizens choosing to explore their own national territory. This internal growth is fueled by improved local infrastructure and better access to information regarding regional hidden gems. By strengthening the domestic market, Mexico is creating a more sustainable and resilient economic foundation for the tourism sector.
Looking ahead, Mexico is well-positioned to continue building on its success in the tourism and sector. By balancing its well-established relationships with North American neighbors while successfully inviting the rest of the world to explore its inland treasures, Mexico has solidified its status as a versatile and welcoming global hub.
