Preventive Measures Against Covid No Longer Mandatory in Jalisco

Given the notable decrease in COVID-19 cases, coupled with the percentage of vaccines applied to date, the Jalisco Health Secretariat reports that preventive measures for this disease are no longer mandatory throughout the state. Meanwhile, the federal government eliminated mask mandates in airports, as well as on flights, in all of Mexico.

Mexico’s Most Populous State Approves Same-Sex Marriage

The Congress of the central State of Mexico on Tuesday approved reforms to the new law that allows same-sex marriage. The approved opinion establishes reforms to various articles and additions to the Civil Code, on the requirements to marry, and the definition of concubinage and the rights and obligations that arise from it.

The U.S. Census Bureau Sees a Rise in Latino Surnames

Shifts in prevalent surnames in America reflect the country's increasing diversity. The top names in the United States are Smith, Johnson, Williams, Brown and Jones. But Latino names now occupy three spots on the U.S. Census Bureau's top-10 list of surnames. Garcia is the sixth-most common surname. Rodriguez ranks 9th, and Martinez 10th.

GAP: September 2022 Passenger Traffic Up 23.8% at 12 Mexican Airports

For September 2022, the total number of terminal passengers at GAP's 12 Mexican airports increased by 23.8%, compared to the same period of 2019. Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Tijuana and Guadalajara presented an increase in passenger traffic of 54.0%, 47.5%, 37.9% and 11.5% respectively, compared to September 2019.

Hurricane Orlene Hits Mexico’s Pacific Coast Near Mazatlán

Hurricane Orlene made landfall on Mexico’s Pacific coast near the tourist town of Mazatlán on Monday, with winds of more than 80mph (130km/h) before quickly weakening over western Mexico. By midday, Orlene had weakened to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving north-northeast at 10 mph (17 kph).

Hurricane Orlene to Crash into Western Mexico on Monday

Hurricane Orlene, this season's ninth eastern Pacific hurricane, formed last Saturday morning, and though it passed Puerto Vallarta by as a Cat 3 hurricane on Sunday, forecasters say that the now Cat 2 storm is projected to reach the coast of mainland Mexico Monday or Monday night, making landfall just south of Mazatlán, Sinaloa.

Mexico Approved Eliminating Daylight Saving Time

With 445 votes in favor, Mexico's Chamber of Deputies approved President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's proposal to eliminate Daylight Savings Time. The initiative now goes to the Senate for discussion and vote and, if endorsed, will come into effect on October 30.

Orlene Rapidly Strengthens Into a Category 4 Hurricane

At 3:00 am CDT on Sunday, slow-moving Hurricane Orlene evolved into a Category 4 hurricane located 195 km south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and moving north at 7 km/h. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Pacific coast of Mexico from San Blas to Mazatlan. A Hurricane Watch is in effect from Playa Perula to San Blas.

Orlene Strengthens to Hurricane Off Mexico’s Pacific Coast

At 10:00 am CDT, Tropical Storm Orlene evolved into a Category 1 hurricane located 340 km south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and moving north at 7 km/h. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Pacific coast from Playa Perula to San Blas. Orlene is expected to pass just west of Puerto Vallarta from 7 pm Sunday to 7 am Monday.
