Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – For two decades, Art Fumerton has been a cornerstone of the Volcanes community, dedicating his life to transforming futures through education. Now, as he faces a critical medical crisis, the community is coming together to support the man who has given so much to others.
Fumerton, a beloved figure in Puerto Vallarta, founded the Volcanes Kids Education Program with a simple, powerful belief: that education is the ultimate pathway out of poverty. Since its inception, the program has provided hundreds of children with a strong foundation in essential skills, from English and computer literacy to basic math and Spanish reading and writing. The program’s success is a testament to Fumerton’s dedication, with over 400 students currently enrolled in the after-school program.
The impact of the program extends far beyond the classroom. A scholarship initiative has helped 100 students pursue higher education, with 20 of them now university graduates. Notably, four of these graduates have returned to work for the program, and six others serve the community in various capacities, creating a self-sustaining cycle of giving back. Beyond academics, the program fosters a sense of community through clubs for sports, cooking, and arts and crafts, all led by dedicated volunteers. It also offers an adult education program for those seeking to complete their primary and junior high school education.
Despite his tireless efforts, Fumerton now finds himself in a dire situation. He is currently hospitalized in critical condition, and the mounting medical bills are overwhelming. For the past five years, he has used his personal savings to keep the program afloat, now living month-to-month on his modest Social Security income. With their personal resources exhausted, his wife, Mayra, and daughter, Alexa, have launched a fundraiser to help cover his urgent medical costs.
