Tepic, Nayarit – The much-anticipated Tepic-Compostela highway in Nayarit is now slated to begin operations in September 2025, a slight adjustment to the original timeline.
Mota-Engil México, the construction firm overseeing the project, announced on February 26, 2025, that a geological fault encountered within mountainous terrain necessitated a revised schedule, adding approximately 60 days to the construction period. This challenge, now resolved with the implementation of a false tunnel, underscores the project’s complex engineering.
Despite the minor delay, progress remains steady, with significant advancements being made on two pivotal bridges and the highway’s access point to the Riviera Nayarit International Airport in Tepic. The highway, encompassing 26 kilometers of dual A2 lanes and featuring 31 major structures, including 10 main structures, 19 crossing structures, and two railroad overpasses, promises to revolutionize travel within the region.
Upon its completion, the highway will dramatically reduce travel time between Tepic and the southern coastal areas to a mere 50 minutes. This efficient route will not only enhance accessibility but also offer travelers a delightful passage through Nayarit’s stunning landscapes. Moreover, it will provide streamlined access to cherished locales like San Blas, with its rich history and inviting town square; Sayulita, a haven for surfers drawn to its exceptional waves; and Punta Mita, known for its opulent resorts and tranquil beaches.
The nearing completion of the Tepic-Compostela highway, coupled with the anticipated December 2025 opening of the final segment of the Jala-Puerto Vallarta International Airport highway, heralds a new era of connectivity for the western coasts of Nayarit and Jalisco.
These developments are poised to attract an influx of visitors from across Mexico, fostering increased road travel and encouraging the exploration of the region’s abundant natural and cultural treasures.
