Mexico City – Millions of mobile phone users in Mexico will have additional time to register their prepaid cell phone lines after the federal government approved a 184-day extension for linking phone numbers to the national mobile telephone registry through the CURP (Unique Population Registry Code).
The measure benefits an estimated 82 million users who have not yet completed the registration process. Instead of ending on June 30, the deadline will now be staggered between August and December 2026, based on the last digit of each phone number.
The extension was confirmed Thursday morning by Mexico’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT), an agency operating under the federal government’s Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency. Officials said the additional time will help facilitate registration, reduce congestion in the system, and avoid service interruptions for millions of users.
Under the revised schedule, prepaid users whose phone numbers end in 0 must complete registration by August 15, while those ending in 1 have until August 31.
Numbers ending in 2 and 3 must be registered by September 15 and September 30, respectively. Users with phone numbers ending in 4 and 5 have deadlines of October 15 and October 31.
For numbers ending in 6 and 7, the registration deadlines are November 15 and November 30. Finally, users whose numbers end in 8 or 9 will have until December 15 and December 31, respectively, to complete the process.
The CRT emphasized that the schedule applies only to prepaid mobile lines. Customers with contract-based service plans are automatically linked to the registry and do not need to take additional action.
Officials also warned that prepaid lines that remain unregistered after their corresponding deadline may face suspension. As a result, users are encouraged to complete the process well before their assigned date.
Registration can be completed online through the government’s official portal, where users are asked to provide the information necessary to connect their phone number with their CURP.
Authorities say the extension reflects the large number of pending registrations and recognizes the important role mobile phones play in daily life. For many people, cell phones are essential tools for work, education, banking, communication, and access to digital services.
By spreading registration deadlines over several months, the government hopes to create a smoother transition, give users sufficient time to comply, and ensure that millions of people remain connected while the new registry is fully implemented.
