Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Construction officially began on Wednesday, July 30, for the Amado Nervo Bridge – one of the most important infrastructure projects uniting Bahía de Banderas and Puerto Vallarta. Also known as the Ameca River Bridge, this long-anticipated development is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity and ease traffic congestion along the overburdened Federal Highway 200.
Planning for the bridge began in 2015, with multiple delays pushing the start date. Now officially underway, the project marks a significant step forward for both Jalisco and Nayarit. The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero and Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro, joined by Bahía de Banderas Mayor Héctor Santana, Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Munguía, and Secretary of Infrastructure Jesús Esteva Medina.
Governor Navarro Quintero confirmed that the bridge will be completed by November 2026 with a total investment of 900 million pesos. Of this, 200 million will be allocated in 2025 and the remaining 700 million in 2026.
The new bridge will span 800 meters in length and 24 meters in width, featuring four lanes of toll-free traffic. It is expected to directly benefit more than 500,000 people who live and commute between the two municipalities.
Luis Munguía also announced future improvements to Federation Avenue in Puerto Vallarta, which will be part of the 2026 budget. Governor Lemus noted that the State of Jalisco is currently advancing the Las Juntas interchange, which includes a new elevated bridge and six-lane expansion along Avenida Federación, in addition to ongoing maintenance of Highway 544.
When completed, the Amado Nervo Bridge will reduce travel time by up to 25 minutes and provide a safer, faster route for residents, workers, students, and tourists. It will also offer improved access to Puerto Vallarta International Airport and enhance emergency response capabilities throughout the region.
