Puerto Vallarta’s traditional markets are taking center stage this weekend with a celebration of flavor, culture, and community. On Saturday, June 14th, the Municipal Government will host El Sazón en sus Mercados Renace (The Seasoning in Your Markets Reborn), a culinary competition aimed at rescuing traditional flavors and showcasing the rich culinary heritage found in local markets.
Set to be held at the Emiliano Zapata Municipal Market on Lázaro Cárdenas Street, the event will run from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and is free to the public. Attendees can expect a festive atmosphere complete with live music, folkloric dance groups, and a delicious variety of home-style dishes available for tasting and purchase.
Reviving a popular tradition from previous years, the event – formerly known as Sabor en Competencia – highlights the importance of buying local and celebrates the role of Puerto Vallarta’s municipal markets in preserving culinary customs.
Deputy Director of City Markets Daniel Alejandro Alarcón Pulido emphasized the value of continuing this tradition, stating, “Not everything done in the past was bad, so we’re reviving it and adding our own essence.”
Three markets will be participating: Río Cuale, 5 de Diciembre, and Emiliano Zapata. Each will present a signature dish in a friendly competition involving eight kitchens. A panel of culinary experts will judge the entries, and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners. Prizes are sponsored by local organizations including CANACO, CANIRAC, City Council departments, and supportive council members.
Visitors will have the chance to sample traditional dishes prepared by local vendors, many inspired by the nostalgic flavors of family-run merenderos and cenadurías. With its mix of food, music, and culture, this event promises to bring the community together in celebration of everything that makes Puerto Vallarta’s markets so special.
