Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, México – Building on the momentum of a year that saw thousands of families receive essential healthcare at no cost, Puerto Vallarta is set to significantly broaden its medical reach in 2026. Under the leadership of Mayor Luis Munguía, the City Council recently approved the new operating rules for the Doctor Tucán Medical Clinic program.
This decision establishes a solid legal and administrative foundation for a municipal health system that has already become a vital resource for the community, providing over 20,000 general consultations in its first year.
The program’s physical presence is expanding through the addition of two new fixed clinics in Mojoneras and El Pitillal. These new sites will join the established facilities in Coapinole and Ixtapa, creating a more accessible network of care across the region. By doubling the number of permanent locations, the city ensures that high-quality medical services are woven directly into the neighborhoods where residents live and work.

For those living in more remote or underserved areas, the city is also enhancing its mobile medical unit. This specialized vehicle, staffed by skilled professionals, acts as a clinic on wheels, bringing both basic and specialized services to individuals who might otherwise face geographical or economic hurdles. The mobile unit serves as a cornerstone of the city’s commitment to health equity, ensuring that a person’s location does not determine their level of care.
This focus on comprehensive wellness now extends to vision health, as the mobile clinic will begin offering eye examinations and free prescription glasses for those in need. Furthermore, the program is boosting its diagnostic capabilities by incorporating four new laboratories. These facilities are designed to catch health issues early, a goal reflected in the ambitious target of performing 1,000 mammograms this year to aid in the early detection of breast cancer.
These advancements follow a highly productive 2025, during which the program successfully managed over 7,000 dental appointments and more than 28,000 laboratory tests. As these services transition into the new year with increased funding and broader coverage, the Doctor Tucán program continues to evolve into a cornerstone of public health, prioritizing prevention and accessible care for every resident of Puerto Vallarta.
