Downtown Residents Meet with Mayor to Address Concerns

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Last Thursday, interim Mayor Francisco José Martínez Gil met with residents of the downtown area to discuss their concerns. The Mayor listened to resident proposals and instructed city officials to address the issues.

A major concern was the presence of homeless people. Residents reported public defecation, harassment, and criminal activity. The Mayor acknowledged efforts by the Municipal DIF System to relocate homeless individuals, but noted their return.

He proposed exploring alternative solutions, including a homeless shelter with support from civil society organizations. Additionally, he directed the Citizen Security Directorate to increase patrols while respecting homeless people’s rights.

Residents also requested increased police presence due to frequent robberies and assaults. They cited specific recent incidents.

Traffic concerns included unauthorized parking in yellow zones, illegally parked cargo vehicles, and camper vans used as residences. Residents requested intervention by the Municipal Traffic and Roads sub-directorate.

Another concern was poorly maintained utility infrastructure. Residents pointed to dangerous open trenches left by telecommunications companies and the CFE, as well as improperly repaired sidewalks and failures in public lighting. The head of Municipal Public Services committed to addressing these issues.

Garbage collection and cleanliness in public areas used as restrooms were also concerns. Residents suggested SEAPAL Vallarta address sewage runoff in some areas and requested support or incentives for struggling businesses.

Businesses struggling economically were another topic. Residents requested support or incentives to prevent closures. The Mayor agreed to tour the downtown area to personally assess the problems. He emphasized collaboration in finding solutions.
