Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The El Salado Estuary, a Protected Natural Area (ANP) in the heart of the Puerto Vallarta hotel zone, has officially reopened as a park for biological conservation and environmental education, announced biologist Jaime Torres, who oversees the site. The public was treated to an inaugural tour last week, providing a glimpse of the exciting changes in store for this unique ecosystem.
The ANP, which has been expanded to cover an impressive 209 hectares, boasts a brand-new observation tower. This tower serves a dual purpose by also functioning as a vital support structure for Civil Protection and Firefighters, aiding in the early detection of fires, according to the biologist.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works invested an estimated 36 million pesos in upgrading El Salado’s infrastructure. This included new trails, a redesigned entrance to improve security and universal accessibility, a dedicated facility for biologists, and various other enhancements. While the existing floating boarding dock remains unchanged, the overall upgrades to the site are apparent.
Educational tours, including boat rides, are currently being offered free of charge to the public. These tours are available between 9 and 11 am and at 1 pm, lasting approximately an hour. Knowledgeable guides accompany visitors, providing valuable insights and explanations about the ecosystem.
Jaime Torres stressed the need to protect the mangrove and the habitat of the crocodiles that occasionally venture into populated areas due to urban expansion.
What sets the ANP of El Salado apart is its legal protection, despite its location within the city. Torres pointed out that many similar ecosystems in comparable geographical locations “are destined to disappear” due to the lack of protective decrees and comprehensive management plans, a fortunate circumstance that sets the Vallarta area apart.
The reopening of the El Salado estuary’s ANP as a center for conservation and education is a significant step toward preserving this unique natural environment and fostering a deeper understanding of the balance between nature and urban development. Visitors and residents now have an opportunity to appreciate El Salado’s beauty and biodiversity while ensuring its conservation for future generations.
