GAP Announces Historic Expansion of Guanajuato Airport

Silao, Guanajuato – Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) plans to invest more than MX$2.8 billion (US$164.7 million) in Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) from 2025 to 2029, according to its latest Master Development Plan. This investment, three times greater than in the previous five-year plan, responds to steady passenger growth and rising demand in the Bajío region.

The project represents one of the most ambitious expansions in the airport’s history, aiming to enhance both operations and passenger experience. Construction is already underway and scheduled for completion in 2029.

Travelers will soon notice significant improvements throughout the terminal. The baggage claim area is set to expand by an impressive 49%, and two additional passenger screening lanes will be added to speed up the security process. The airport is also adding three new boarding gates, bringing the total to nine, and will introduce five new Autonomous Immigration Filters to streamline the arrivals process. Additionally, the final waiting area will be expanded and remodeled by 150%, offering passengers more space and comfort before their flights.

On the airfield, the changes are just as impactful. The aircraft apron will be expanded by 58%, and six new aircraft positions will be added. These upgrades will allow the airport to better accommodate the growing number of flights and ensure smoother operations.

“At Guanajuato Airport, we have decided to anticipate current and future growth with an investment of this magnitude, which will allow us to meet demand. Our goal is to offer the best passenger experience, which involves having efficient airport services, comfortable and spacious facilities, as well as optimal connectivity for the Bajío region,” said Paola Olivo Moreno, airport administrator.

Currently, Guanajuato Airport connects travelers to 21 destinations, including 10 domestic and 11 international routes to the United States. Between January and August 2025, the airport served 2.2 million passengers, a 6.7% increase over the same period last year.

With this bold expansion, GAP reaffirms its commitment to delivering high-quality airport infrastructure, improving passenger services, and strengthening Guanajuato’s role as a key hub for national and international connectivity.
