Guadalajara to Host CONCACAF Tokyo 2020 Qualifiers

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) has announced that the region’s qualification tournament for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 will take place from March 20 to April 1, 2020 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Matches are set to be played at Guadalajara’s Jalisco and Akron Stadiums, with eight teams competing for two spots at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, which will take place in July and August of next year.

Six teams are already confirmed to participate in the qualification tournament: hosts Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and USA. The remaining two teams will be known in September at the conclusion of the Caribbean qualifiers.

The teams will be sorted into two groups of four teams. After round-robin play, the top two in each group will qualify for the tournament’s semi-finals, with the two finalists reaching the Olympic Games later in the year.

Mexico became the first nation from the region to win the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament at the 2012 games in London.

“Our teams have delivered strong and historic performances in the Olympic Games, we are looking forward to raising the competitive level in the region and bringing the gold back to Concacaf next year,” Concacaf General Secretary Philippe Moggio said.

“This competition plays a big role in showcasing the best of football across our Confederation, and we are very excited to host the men’s Olympic qualifying tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico,” he added.
