Jalisco Ballet Brings Giselle to Life in Guadalajara July 31-Aug 3

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Now is a great time to plan a cultural getaway to Guadalajara! The Jalisco Ballet will bring the timeless classic Giselle to the historic Degollado Theater from July 31 to August 3, offering audiences a powerful blend of artistry, emotion, and tradition.

Presented under the direction of Lucy Arce, this romantic ballet – first premiered in 1841 – tells the haunting tale of a young peasant girl who dies of heartbreak and becomes a spirit guardian. Known for its emotional depth and technical demands, Giselle hasn’t been performed in its entirety in Guadalajara for over two decades. The last full presentation was by the Cuban National Ballet in 2002.

Now, more than 40 dancers from the Jalisco Ballet will revive this masterpiece, with choreography inspired by the original work of Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, and music by Adolphe Adam. Three rotating casts will share the lead roles: Sara de Miranda, Keyla Meléndez, and Angeline De Jesús will each perform as Giselle, while Carlos Hernández, Ángel Macías, and Raúl Pedraza will rotate as Albrecht. The role of Hilarión will be portrayed by Jorge Rosales, Fernando Martínez, and Jonatan Cadena.

The production includes specially designed sets and costumes that capture the romantic 19th-century aesthetic, transporting the audience into the ballet’s mythical world. The second act, set in a moonlit cemetery, features the ethereal “white act,” a visually striking and technically challenging section that showcases the Willis—spirit maidens who dance in search of vengeance.

This revival honors a cornerstone of classical ballet while aiming to inspire new generations of dance lovers. The effort is part of a larger cultural movement supported by Jalisco’s Ministry of Culture to bring world-class performances to the region.

Guadalajara, often called the “Pearl of the West,” stands as one of Mexico’s leading cultural centers. Birthplace of mariachi and tequila, the city blends historical charm with a forward-thinking arts scene that includes music, cinema, photography, architecture, and dance. Its reputation as a creative hub makes it a top destination for those looking to experience both traditional and contemporary Mexican culture.

Well-connected by air and land, Guadalajara is easily accessible for both domestic and international travelers. Direct flights link the city with major cities across Mexico, the United States, and Latin America.

Performances of Giselle will take place Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1 at 8:00 pm, Saturday, August 2 at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, August 3 at 1:00 pm. Tickets range from $300 to $650 MXN and are available at boletomovil.com and the Degollado Theater box office.
