Jalisco Legislators Seek to Increase Penalties for Animal Abuse

Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico – Animal abuse has many faces in Mexico, which is why Mexican authorities have taken action on several occasions to legislate and impose sanctions on those who mistreat animals.

Jalisco is one of the states with the greatest progress in public policies to protect pets, however, these sanctions are not enough for some legislators, who are now seeking to intensify penalties for animal abusers.

Leticia Pérez, a Morena Deputy of the Jalisco Congress, intends to send the initiative to the local chamber to increase economic sanctions and jail time for those who mistreat animals.

Currently, the penalties for abusers range from 50 to 100 UMAS, that is, between 4,800 pesos and 9,600 pesos, in addition to mandatory community service and awareness courses to dissuade the repetition of these antisocial acts.

These penalties could be increased to 19,200 pesos and 16 months in prison, according to the initiative that the deputy is promoting.

In case of repetition of these practices, the economic sanctions would increase up to 24 thousand pesos and between 2 and 4 years in prison.
