Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico – In the third quarter of 2024, Mexico experienced a remarkable influx of remittances, totaling approximately $17.06 billion. While the average transaction value decreased slightly to $399 from $401 in the previous quarter, the overall impact of these funds remains significant for the country and its communities.
Specifically, Jalisco has emerged as a key beneficiary, receiving $1.45 billion in remittances during the same period. This represents a 5% increase compared to the third quarter of 2023, affirming Jalisco’s position as the third-highest recipient of remittance income in Mexico, accounting for 8.5% of the national total.
In the year-to-date figures up to the third quarter, Mexico has amassed a total of $48.39 billion in remittances, with Jalisco contributing $4.09 billion. This places the state behind only Guanajuato and Michoacán in terms of total remittance income for 2024.
Breaking it down by municipality, Guadalajara stands out as the leading recipient, garnering $174.9 million, which constitutes 12.1% of the state’s total remittances. Following closely are Zapopan with $102.9 million (7.1%) and Tepatitlán de Morelos with $51.9 million (3.6%).
Interestingly, the municipalities of Ojuelos de Jalisco, Unión de Tula, and Degollado reported the highest per capita remittance income in the third quarter, with impressive figures of $1,328.8, $1,313.4, and $1,242.1 USD, respectively. In contrast, the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area averages between $0 and $150 per person, indicating varying levels of financial support throughout the region.
This steady growth in remittances not only highlights the strong connections between Jalisco residents and their families abroad but also underscores the vital role these funds play in enhancing the local economy. As remittance income continues to rise, Jalisco is poised to benefit significantly, supporting families and communities across the state.
