Jalisco Strengthens Fire Prevention Efforts with Unified Action

Guadalajara, Mexico – In an effort to mitigate the increasing threat of forest fires, Jalisco state officials have convened a multi-agency summit to bolster prevention and response strategies.

The meeting, led by the Jalisco State Civil Protection and Firefighting Unit (UEPCBJ), the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet), and the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), brought together municipal authorities, community leaders, and key stakeholders in fire management.

Recognizing the historical impact of fires on communities and the environment, the focus of the summit was on proactive measures, including:

• Community Education and Training: A comprehensive program will be launched to educate residents in high-risk areas like Bosque de La Primavera and Sierra del Tigre on fire safety, prevention techniques, and evacuation procedures.
• Strategic Collaboration: Close collaboration with landowners, foresters, and cabin owners will be crucial, involving restrictions on activities that increase fire risk and the removal of flammable materials.
• Enhanced Preparedness: Detailed assessments of watersheds and the creation of evacuation routes and firebreaks will be conducted before the dry season.
• Improved Communication: A robust communication strategy will be implemented, utilizing WhatsApp groups to connect neighborhood committees with authorities and disseminate critical information like fire bans and safety guidelines.

“This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to protecting Jalisco’s invaluable natural resources and ensuring the safety of our communities,” said Commander Sergio Ramírez López, Director of the UEPCBJ. “By working together and empowering citizens with knowledge, we can significantly reduce the risk of devastating forest fires.”

Paola Bauche Petersen, head of Semadet, emphasized the importance of public awareness, urging residents to be mindful of fire hazards, avoid open burning, and adhere to official guidelines for responsible fire management. “Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility,” she stated.

The summit resulted in a comprehensive Fire Management Plan outlining specific actions and timelines for implementation. This inter-agency approach signals a proactive and united front against the growing challenge of forest fires in Jalisco.
