Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – The future of Puerto Vallarta’s iconic Malecón was the subject of a recent public consultation where residents cast key votes to determine its use. Held between November 21 and 23, the consultation addressed the long-standing question of whether the seaside promenade should be reopened to cars or remain an exclusive space for pedestrians.
The consultation, organized with the assistance of the Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute (IEPC) of Jalisco, saw nearly 5,000 votes registered across 40 voting stations strategically placed throughout the municipality.
In a recent media interview, Mayor Luis Munguía shared that the preliminary count indicates an exceptionally close result, describing the situation as a “technical tie” between the options. Initial tallies show votes for and against reopening the thoroughfare are nearly equal in number.
The community participation underscored the passionate feelings surrounding the Malecón’s use. Some residents who supported the return of vehicular traffic expressed concern that the years-long closure had negatively affected the economic health of local businesses and potentially hindered tourist movement. Conversely, many others strongly advocated for maintaining its pedestrian-only status, cherishing the enhanced safety and relaxed, leisurely atmosphere it provides for families and visitors alike.
The final outcome will be officially determined once the IEPC completes its comprehensive analysis of all registered votes. Mayor Munguía emphasized that the administration is committed to respecting the results, which will be weighed against “technical criteria and study analysis.” He also noted that the final decision might not be a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ as the ballot included options for partial opening or restricted traffic by schedule, offering a nuanced solution that could accommodate various interests.
Amidst the consultation, the Malecón’s renovation work continues at a brisk pace. The mayor confirmed that progress is moving swiftly, anticipating that the first stage of the project will be completed within the next two weeks. He added that the entire renovation will transform the beloved promenade, leaving it looking “like never before seen,” a significant enhancement for the community and its visitors.
