Marina Vallarta Golf Course Completes Renovation of All 18 Greens

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Marina Vallarta Golf Course, Puerto Vallarta’s first and most iconic course, has completed a major overhaul of its 18 greens. With an investment of over 10 million pesos, the course has been upgraded with a new, resilient type of grass, ensuring its continued status as a top destination for golfers.

According to Homero Hernández, the regional manager for Invired, the company that operates both Marina Vallarta and Vista Vallarta golf courses, the transformation has been in the works since last year. The project has focused on improving the course’s grass to enhance its quality and provide a fresh experience for players.

The course, which opened in May 1989, was due for an upgrade. The renovation began in 2024 with the “back nine,” the latter half of the 18 holes originally designed by Joe Finger, taking advantage of its stunning natural surroundings. The second half of the course, known as the “front turn,” was renovated starting on May 5.

The newly renovated course now features Paspalum platinum grass. This special hybrid grass is well-suited for the warm, coastal climate of Puerto Vallarta. It can tolerate both fresh and salt water, making it a perfect solution for holes near the beach, like hole 4, where salinity is a major factor. The use of this grass guarantees a consistently green and healthy appearance, even in harsh conditions.

This innovative grass also brings significant environmental benefits. It requires less water and fertilizer compared to other types of grass, which helps reduce costs and the course’s environmental footprint. Its natural resistance to disease and extreme weather conditions further ensures the course remains in excellent shape year-round.

The extensive work on the greens included removing the old grass, excavating, adding new sand, and upgrading the drainage systems. To celebrate the completion of this phase, a special event was held for 50 golfers and tourism professionals, who were among the first to experience the improved course.

According to Hernández, upcoming plans include extending Paspalum grass across the entire course and modernizing irrigation and drainage systems. “This investment will allow us to reaffirm Marina Vallarta’s place as one of the best golf courses in the region,” he said.

With its renewed greens and plans for further upgrades, Marina Vallarta Golf Course not only strengthens Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a premier golfing destination but also adds to the city’s appeal as a world-class hub for tourism, recreation, and investment.
