Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In an eagerly awaited prelude to this year’s “What A Drag,” a weekly spotlight introduces us to the bold participants who will undergo spectacular transformations into drag personalities, embodying the spirit and panache synonymous with drag performances. This exceptional event sees straight men donning glamorous ensembles, showcasing their grace, style, and humor as they vie for the coveted title of “Miss What A Drag.”
This week, the spotlight is on Brandon Johnson, a resident of Salt Lake City proudly sponsored by Tropicasa Realty. Guiding Brandon through his fabulous journey is his Fairy Drag Mother, Jules Crowley-Atkinson, a seasoned hair and makeup artist with a professional career in live entertainment spanning over 30 years, including notable shows including Les Misérables and Dame Edna. Jules divides her time between Gananoque, Ontario, and her “happy place” Puerto Vallarta.
Brandon shares his motivation for joining “What A Drag,” expressing gratitude to friends Franklin and Jorge from Tropicasa who introduced him to the event. “They said I had the perfect body type for the show… whatever that means!” Despite initial uncertainties about his physique, Brandon is excited to unleash his inner performer and contribute to the noble cause supported by the organization.
Explaining his choice of Puerto Vallarta, Brandon recounts his love for Mexico since his early twenties and the captivating allure of Vallarta, where the mountains and jungle meet beautiful beaches and water. He highlights the vibrant city life, delectable cuisine, and, most importantly, the warmth of the people, declaring them the best anywhere in the world.
When asked about his drag name, Brandon reveals, “My teenage daughter came up with the name. Brandi was an easy derivation of my name, Brandon, and Styles came from Harry Styles.”
The “What A Drag” event not only celebrates diversity and inclusivity but also serves as a crucial fundraising platform for the Casa Esperanza Women’s Shelter. All proceeds from the spectacular event will aid women and children affected by domestic violence, providing them with assistance and refuge.
