Mexico Records More Than 250 Cases of Omicron Variant

Mexico City, Mexico – At least 13 states in Mexico have recorded cases of the new Omicron Covid-19 variant. The sharp and fast increase was detected over the past week when, by the third week of December, only 23 cases in three states were found.

As of January 1st, however, more than 250 cases of the variant had been detected in at least 13 of the country’s 32 states.

Although Mexico’s federal health officials have not made any comment on the figures, the numbers being reported by the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data have not been disputed.

In February (2021), the federal government reported that the results of genomic sequencing carried out in Mexico are recorded on the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) website.

Mexico City has the highest reported number of cases with 159 followed by the State of Mexico with 35. The states of Quintana Roo and Yucatán also have registered cases of the Omicron variant, with 18 and 16 infections, respectively. In Tabasco, there are 12.

Other states with recorded cases include Tamaulipas, Puebla, Baja California, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca.

To date, 254 cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in the country. That number is likely to increase after the holiday season when laboratories reopen and counts begin again.
