New Commission and Incentives Bolster Jalisco’s Film Sector

Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico – Jalisco’s audiovisual industry demonstrated remarkable growth in 2024, with 189 productions generating a substantial economic impact of 950 million pesos and creating over 4,900 jobs. To further elevate this success, the state has unveiled a restructured Film Commission, now known as Filma Jalisco, integrated within the Ministry of Tourism. This strategic move aims to attract major productions and establish Jalisco as a premier film capital in Latin America.

Michelle Fridman Hirsch, head of the Ministry of Tourism, articulated the vision to draw significant filming projects to the region, stimulating economic growth and enhancing Jalisco’s visibility. “We aspire to host large-scale events that not only fill our hotels and generate revenue, but also showcase the unparalleled cinematic potential of Guadalajara and Jalisco,” she stated.

Filma Jalisco, under the direction of Alejandro Tavares, will serve as a catalyst for economic development and tourism, offering robust incentives to both national and international production companies. The state’s Cash Rebate policy will provide financial support for investments in various audiovisual projects, including feature films, series, music videos, and post-production.

Filma Jalisco will also be implementing a program dedicated to supporting the local audiovisual industry, enabling Jalisco-based companies to actively participate in and benefit from these productions. “We envision local producers acting as vital conduits, ensuring that the state’s incentives reach those who contribute to the industry’s growth,” Tavares emphasized.

Mauro Garza Marín, Coordinator of Economic Growth and Development, highlighted the state’s commitment to fostering a thriving film sector. “We recognize the audiovisual industry as a powerful driver of economic development, tourism, and job creation,” he remarked. “Our goal is to ensure that every municipality understands the potential impact of hosting productions, showcasing our state to a global audience.”

An innovative initiative, Jalisco Lab, a training program developed in collaboration with Netflix, will further empower the local industry. The inaugural edition will feature two free programs. One, Women Creators, will provide a workshop on literary adaptations for films and series, offering personalized mentorship from established screenwriters. The second, Production Professionals, will offer specialized workshops in online production, production coordination, and location management, alongside a masterclass on production fundamentals.

Additional details regarding Filma Jalisco’s activities, including competition dates and requirements, will be disclosed in April. This comprehensive approach underscores Jalisco’s dedication to solidifying its position as a leading hub for audiovisual production, fostering economic prosperity and showcasing its unique appeal to the world.
