New Ferry Route Connects Puerto Vallarta to Marias Islands

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Starting in January 2026, travelers will be able to explore Las Islas Marías through a new ferry route departing from Puerto Vallarta, opening access to one of Mexico’s most distinctive natural and cultural destinations.

The experience is offered as a three-day, two-night package that includes round-trip travel aboard a high-speed ferry with capacity for 199 passengers. Departures are scheduled every Friday at 8 am, with a 5-hour crossing to María Madre, returning to Puerto Vallarta on Sunday evening.

Once known for housing a federal prison for more than a century, Las Islas Marías have been reimagined as a sustainable tourism project that blends history, conservation, and community life. On María Madre, visitors can explore the Site Museum, Santa María de Guadalupe Church, and Plaza Juárez in Puerto Balleto. Guided visits to the Government House and the Nun’s House, along with scenic bike rides around the bay, offer deeper insight into the island’s past and present.

Accommodations range from single rooms to family homes for up to eight guests. Some lodging options include private pools, grills, palapas, sports courts, and golf carts for easy transportation. The package also features buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus access to a beach club, restaurant, bar, gym, spa, and other shared amenities designed for a comfortable stay.

The itinerary extends beyond sightseeing. Guests may take part in workshops on nautical knots, behind-the-scenes tours of ferry operations, and visits to the historical museum that documents the islands’ transformation from a penal colony to a conservation-focused destination.

Recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, Las Islas Marías protect a rich ecosystem with endemic wildlife, including the yellow-headed parrot, the caracara, and the island raccoon. Cultural traditions are also highlighted through a crafts market near the iconic Mandela Arch, showcasing national and indigenous artistry.

With the launch of this route, Puerto Vallarta strengthens its position as one of Mexico’s leading tourist ports, connecting travelers to a destination where nature, history, culture, and recreation come together with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Pricing details will be released by the operating company prior to the 2026 debut.
