Puerto Vallarta is about to welcome a major new attraction that combines entertainment, education, and conservation. The Acuario Vallarta (Vallarta Aquarium), located in La Isla Shopping Center on Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue, is set to open its doors this October following an investment of 80 million pesos.
Spanning 2,200 square meters, the aquarium will feature approximately 2,000 marine organisms from 60 species, including colorful tropical fish, rays, and sharks. A standout feature will be a breathtaking 360-degree tunnel, giving visitors the sensation of walking underwater, surrounded on all sides by marine life.
The biggest news, however, is the arrival of 10 penguins that will live in a special interactive pond. Visitors will be able to enjoy a close-up experience with these charming birds inside a space inspired by Antarctica. The Aurora Australis Dome, designed to replicate the visual magic of the southern lights, will create an unforgettable atmosphere for guests.
The penguins will be cared for by a team of trained experts, and the aquarium’s operators – who also managed the Mazatlán Aquarium – have secured federal permits to bring the animals to Vallarta. Animal well-being is a top priority, and the facility will be fully staffed by experienced professionals, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and specialized care for wild and feral species.
Biologist Pablo Rojas, director of Acuario Vallarta, and engineer Raúl Escobar, who is leading construction, presented the project as both a source of fun and a platform for learning. Through virtual reality, educational materials, and interactive exhibits, the aquarium will explore topics such as climate change, biodiversity, and marine conservation.
More than just an attraction, the Vallarta Aquarium will serve as a support center for wildlife conservation. It will work closely with government agencies, research centers, and private organizations to protect animal life and promote environmental education. A new foundation supported by the aquarium will also be created to champion these causes.
With its combination of high-quality exhibits, immersive experiences, and environmental purpose, the Vallarta Aquarium promises to be a new favorite for Banderas Bay area families, students, and tourists. It’s a major step forward in Puerto Vallarta’s mission to celebrate nature while preserving it for future generations.
