‘Operation Lifesaver, Winter 2023’ for Holiday Beach Safety

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As the holiday season approaches and millions flock to Mexico’s stunning beaches, the Mexican Navy has launched “Operation Lifesaver: Winter 2023” to guarantee the safety of both domestic and international tourists.

This operation, running from December 16th to January 7th, forms part of the broader Marina Plan and focuses on providing security and surveillance for beachgoers in popular tourist destinations within Jalisco and other areas under the Navy’s purview.

A Multifaceted Approach to Beach Safety
Operation Lifesaver deploys a comprehensive strategy encompassing lifesaving actions, medical support, and maritime, aerial, and terrestrial surveillance. A total of 154 naval personnel, including Admirals, Captains, and specialized teams, will be on duty, supported by nine units. These include two vessels for maritime surveillance, two smaller boats for at-sea rescues, and five land units patrolling the coast. The operation’s primary objective is to safeguard human life at sea.

Close Collaboration and Public Awareness
The Mexican Navy emphasizes the importance of collaboration with Civil Protection and other authorities at all levels. They will also deploy the ENSAR-VALLARTA Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station, equipped with highly trained personnel.

Adherence to guidelines issued by the Port Captaincy regarding sea conditions is crucial. Green flags signify safe conditions, yellow flags indicate caution due to currents or changing weather, and red flags strictly prohibit swimming. Lifeguards and medical personnel will be stationed at rescue points along the coast, ready to respond to any emergencies.

Staying Safe and Enjoying the Holidays
The Navy urges beachgoers to follow these recommendations for a safe and enjoyable holiday:

  • Practice COVID-19 prevention measures.
  • Follow lifeguards’ instructions.
  • Supervise children closely.
  • Avoid swimming after consuming food or alcohol.
  • Stay within lifeguard-designated areas.
  • Avoid swimming in areas with maritime traffic.
  • Ensure proper safety gear on smaller boats.
  • Keep beach access clear for patrols and ambulances.
  • Use sunscreen and stay hydrated.
  • Avoid littering on the beaches.

For emergencies at sea, contact the XII Naval Zone at 322-221-11-23 or the Secretariat of the Navy at 800-627-4621 (800 MARINA 1).

By working together, the Mexican Navy and beachgoers can ensure a safe and relaxing holiday season for everyone.

Remember, safety first!
