Puerto Vallarta Airport Fees Surge, Raising Travel Concerns

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The 2025 tariff hikes announced by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) and Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México (GACM) have sparked widespread concern among travelers and industry experts. These increases, impacting both airlines and passengers, position Puerto Vallarta as one of the priciest destinations in Mexico for air travel.

The TUA (airport use fee) in Puerto Vallarta will skyrocket by 59 percent, reaching a staggering 610.50 pesos (approx. $30.34 USD). This figure dwarfs the TUA at other major airports in the country, including Mexico City International Airport, where the fee will be $28.90 USD.

Airlines are also feeling the pinch, passing additional expenses onto travelers. Viva Aerobus has increased its fares by 31%, averaging $52.60 USD per passenger, while Volaris fares have risen 9.4%, reaching an average of $52. GAP attributes these adjustments to a rise in concession fees from 5% to 9% of its revenues. However, travelers argue that this should not be at the expense of passengers.

Airport operators justify these fee hikes as necessary to fund infrastructure improvements. However, many travelers and industry experts question the value proposition, citing subpar conditions and a lack of transparency in investment plans.

Jonathan Félix, an airline analyst at Verum, underscores the need for stronger regulation in the airport sector. He notes that while fees continue to rise, passengers often experience deteriorating conditions, including dysfunctional bathrooms and lengthy baggage claim processes.

As international travelers face increasing costs at Mexican airports, the future of Mexico’s tourism industry hinges on striking a balance between revenue generation and passenger satisfaction. Without adequate oversight and accountability, the country’s airports risk becoming less competitive and less appealing to visitors.
