Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Despite an overall 2.5% decrease in year-over-year passenger traffic across GAP’s 12 Mexican airports in May 2024, the Puerto Vallarta International Airport experienced growth, with a 3.2% increase in passengers during the same period.
This positive performance at Puerto Vallarta comes after a reduction in passenger traffic in April. In May, the airport handled 509,800 passengers, exceeding 494,100 from May 2023. This increase occurred despite May being considered the low season for tourism.
Looking at year-to-date figures, Puerto Vallarta remains the only major GAP airport with passenger numbers exceeding 2023 levels. Through May 2024, the airport has seen a total of 3,247,400 passengers, a 2.9% increase compared to 3,154,800 in the same period of 2023.
Domestic travel to Puerto Vallarta showed signs of recovery in May 2024. The airport received 250,200 domestic passengers, a 5.2% increase from 237,900 in May 2023. However, domestic travel for the first five months of 2024 remains down 7.0% compared to 2023.
International travel to Puerto Vallarta continues to flourish. The airport welcomed 259,600 international passengers in May 2024, a 1.4% increase from 256,200 in May 2023. Year-to-date, international travel has grown by 8.6% with a total of 2,189,700 passengers in the first five months of 2024 compared to 2,017,100 in 2023.
The strong performance of international travel suggests continued positive momentum for Puerto Vallarta. As the peak season for national tourism approaches, it will be interesting to see if domestic travel can catch up and contribute to even greater growth at the airport.
