Puerto Vallarta and New York Become Sister Cities of Pride

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Vallarta Pride and NYC Pride officially signed a twinning agreement during the 2025 edition of Vallarta Pride, creating a new partnership focused on promoting LGBTQ+ rights, inclusive tourism, and cultural exchange. The agreement strengthens ties between two of North America’s most influential pride festivals.

The signing ceremony was held during the largest Vallarta Pride to date and included key figures such as Councilwoman Melissa Madero, who represented Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Munguía; Michele Irimia, co-president of NYC Pride; Miguel González Herevia of the Mexican Consulate in New York; and Javier Jiménez, president of the Vallarta Pride organizing committee.

“This is a tremendous collaborative effort over several months that culminates with the realization of this alliance, a firm first step toward a binational agenda of inclusion, culture, and human rights,” said Councilwoman Madero. She expressed special thanks to Mayor Munguía for his support, highlighting the role of the Tourism Services and Visitor Relations Commission in making this project a reality.

Michele Irimia, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and frequent speaker at international forums, played a key role in the signing. Alongside other NYC Pride delegates – including Joshua Woods, Matt Cheng, and Zoe Gorringe – she emphasized the importance of strengthening community and institutional ties between Puerto Vallarta and New York.

As part of the twinning agreement, both cities will roll out a joint 2025–2026 campaign focused on promoting LGBTQ+ leadership, enhancing cultural understanding, and encouraging travel to both destinations.

The signing capped off a record-breaking edition of Vallarta Pride. Over nine days, hotel occupancy exceeded 80%, and more than 30,000 people joined the parade, which included 1,900 participants and 90 contingents along a nearly 3-kilometer route. The Block Party alone drew over 25,000 attendees and garnered national and international media attention.

NYC Pride, rooted in the legacy of the 1969 Stonewall riots, is regarded as the birthplace of modern LGBTQ+ activism. Its annual celebration attracts over two million people and blends advocacy, remembrance, and celebration.

Through this alliance, Puerto Vallarta and New York become sister cities of Pride, standing together in their dedication to building a more inclusive and respectful world.
