Puerto Vallarta Bike Lane Rehabilitation Program Moves Forward

Puerto Vallarta Bike Lane Rehabilitation Program Moves Forward

Puerto Vallarta has approved a permanent rehabilitation and maintenance program for its bike lanes, marking an important step toward safer mobility and a cleaner urban environment. The initiative, led by Councilwoman Erika Yesenia García Rubio, is designed to benefit more than 6,000 cyclists and strengthen the city’s commitment to sustainable transportation.

During a recent City Council session, officials authorized the restoration of 14 sections of bike lanes, covering 734,721 meters and connecting 30 neighborhoods across the municipality. The project aims not only to improve cyclist safety but also to encourage a more orderly and health-focused approach to mobility.

Bike lanes, which are designated exclusively for bicycle use, may be visually or physically separated from roads to protect riders. The new program ensures these spaces remain in optimal condition through ongoing maintenance and coordinated efforts among municipal departments.

Several agencies – including the Directorate of Infrastructure and Public Works, Public Safety, Territorial Planning and Urban Development, and the Municipal Treasury – have been tasked with carrying out the plan. Their collaboration, alongside civil associations, cycling groups, and local residents, is considered essential for the program’s success.

Councilwoman García Rubio emphasized the value of working together to strengthen cycling infrastructure and promote shared responsibility in public spaces. Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Munguía echoed this vision, reaffirming the administration’s dedication to environmental stewardship and improving residents’ quality of life.

Cycling advocates also welcomed the decision. Juan Manuel Fernández Lomelí, representing the Bocion and Movci collectives, noted that rehabilitating these routes brings encouragement to cyclists who have long sought safer, continuous paths throughout the city.

With the program now approved, Puerto Vallarta moves closer to becoming a more accessible, connected, and environmentally conscious community for cyclists of all ages.
