Puerto Vallrta, Mexico – Local cyclists Fernando Godínez and Joel Cruz put Puerto Vallarta on the map with a remarkable showing at the prestigious L’Étape du Tour de France in Nice. The event, a massive gathering of over 16,000 cyclists from across the globe, proved to be a thrilling challenge and a testament to the athletes’ unwavering determination.
Starting strong from a position of 300, Godínez and Cruz strategically navigated the course, working collaboratively to gain ground on leading competitors. The first steep climb presented a significant hurdle, causing the main pack to splinter. Unfazed, the Vallarta duo upped their efforts, pushing themselves to maintain pace with the determined field.
Godínez echoed this sentiment, awestruck by the experience: “Everyone was phenomenal! The organization was top-notch, with the entire route closed to traffic for the event. The aid stations were phenomenal, offering water, bread, fruit, and even unique drinks we’d never tried before. We managed to catch up to a good number of cyclists, but some were simply untouchable!”
The exceptional caliber of the European competition left a lasting impression. “The level here is incredible,” remarked one cyclist, “There were riders of all ages, some older folks with unbelievable climbing prowess!”
The grueling course, featuring four formidable mountain passes – Col de Brauss, Col de Turini, Col de la Colmiane, and the notorious Col de la Couillole – demanded exceptional physical and mental fortitude. Despite the immense challenge, both Godínez and Cruz persevered, achieving commendable results.
Fernando Godínez crossed the finish line in an impressive 685th place, clocking in a time of 6 hours and 14 minutes. Joel Cruz followed closely behind, securing a well-deserved 1030th place with a time of 6 hours and 35 minutes, a remarkable feat considering the nearly 16,000 participants.
