Puerto Vallarta Hits 98% Occupancy for First 2026 Holiday

Puerto Vallarta confirmed its status as a premier global destination this week, recording a staggering 98% occupancy rate during the first long weekend of 2026. This surge in tourism coincided with commemoration of the anniversary of the 1917 Mexican Constitution, drawing a diverse mix of domestic and international travelers to the coast of Jalisco.

The city’s success is largely attributed to its exceptional accessibility and logistical convenience. With the Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport operating at high frequency, visitors benefited from increased seating on established routes.

Travelers from northern hubs like Los Angeles, Dallas, Vancouver, and Toronto found it easier than ever to reach the tropics. This seamless air connectivity allows for effortless short-term stays, making the city an ideal choice for those looking to balance relaxation with a busy schedule.

Rosalba Alejandra Cornejo Cornejo, Director of Municipal Tourism and Economic Development, noted that the weekend aligned perfectly with the peak winter season. While domestic families arrived from Guadalajara and the Bajío region to enjoy the school break, international visitors from the United States and Canada continued their long-term seasonal stays, drawn by the region’s reliable weather and the peak of the whale-watching season.

Beyond the appeal of the Pacific shoreline, a series of high-profile events transformed the city into a bustling cultural hub. The Vallarta 2026 International Charro Championship offered a prestigious look at Mexico’s national sport, providing family-friendly entertainment that celebrates traditional horsemanship. Simultaneously, the city hosted the conclusion of Bear Week 2026, an inclusive LGBTQ+ gathering that featured world-renowned DJs and further solidified Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a welcoming and diverse community.

Gastronomy also took center stage on Sunday at the 19th annual Ceviche and Aguachile Festival in Parota Park. Food enthusiasts sampled over 40 distinct variations of these coastal classics, complemented by local craft beers and live music. The weekend’s cultural depth was even further enhanced by a special presentation from the National Danish Performance Team, adding a unique international flair to the local festivities.

As the winter season continues, Puerto Vallarta demonstrates that its strength lies in the harmony between its natural beauty and a sophisticated calendar of events. By blending traditional Mexican customs with modern entertainment and world-class culinary experiences, the destination ensures that every visitor finds a reason to return.
