Puerto Vallarta Honors Lifeguards, Announces Enhanced Support

Puerto Vallarta celebrated its dedicated lifeguards on National Lifeguard Day, February 4th, recognizing their vital role in beach safety. Mayor Luis Munguía expressed deep appreciation for the Civil Protection and Fire Department lifeguards’ commitment to protecting residents and visitors. The date commemorates Guillermo “el Chino” Volpe, a lifeguard who tragically lost his life in 1978 while saving a swimmer in Argentina.

Lifeguards play a crucial, often underestimated, role in preventing drownings – the third leading cause of death worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. They expertly monitor aquatic areas, including beaches, pools, and water parks, proactively preventing accidents and performing rescues when necessary.

Mayor Munguía announced significant improvements for these hometown heroes. In the coming days, lifeguards will receive new equipment and specialized training. Twelve new surveillance towers will bolster beach security. Furthermore, the city will construct a gym, enabling lifeguards to maintain peak physical fitness and enhance their emergency response capabilities.

Misael López Muro, director of Civil Protection and Fire, expressed gratitude for the municipal administration’s support, emphasizing the lifeguards’ importance to the entire community. The celebration featured a mass, a dramatic water rescue demonstration, and an awards ceremony honoring the lifeguards’ service. The day concluded with a group photo of the lifeguards and municipal authorities, marking a powerful moment of appreciation and forward-looking commitment to beach safety.
