Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – As the city prepares to ring in the New Year, local authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The Puerto Vallarta Traffic and Roads Department has launched a special operation to curb drunk driving and promote responsible road use.
This initiative, encompassing a range of measures, aims to reduce the risk of accidents during the festive season. Traffic officers are stationed at strategic locations throughout the city, including the intersections of Francisco Medina Ascencio and Politécnico, as well as the Las Juntas area.
These officers are diligently inspecting vehicles for potential safety hazards such as faulty lights, missing license plates, and erratic driving behavior. A key component of the operation, dubbed Salvando Vidas (“Saving Lives”), involves administering breathalyzer tests to drivers to identify those exceeding legal alcohol limits.
Deputy Director of Traffic and Roads, Katya Vargas Guillén, emphasized that the primary objective is not to punish but to foster a culture of responsible driving. “This operation is part of a comprehensive strategy to protect all road users,” stated Guillén. “We prioritize saving lives and preventing accidents that may arise from irresponsible behavior.”
While some citizens have applauded these efforts as a crucial step towards improving road safety during the holidays, others have expressed the need for more widespread implementation of such measures year-round.
For those planning to celebrate the New Year in Puerto Vallarta, alternative transportation options such as taxis, ride-sharing services (Uber, InDriver), and public transportation are relatively inexpensive and readily available.
By prioritizing safety and promoting responsible driving, the city aims to ensure a joyous and accident-free New Year’s Eve for all.
