Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Department of Environmental Sustainability, with support from the Luis Munguía administration, has launched a volunteer program to protect sea turtles during their nesting and release season. The initiative calls on the public to join the effort to safeguard this important species, which is a key part of the local ecosystem and a symbol of the Mexican Pacific.
Every year from July to December, sea turtles nest on Puerto Vallarta’s beaches. Although adapted to ocean life, these turtles rely on the land to lay their eggs. The beaches here provide excellent conditions for the nests, and volunteers are crucial for protecting them from threats and helping more hatchlings safely reach the sea.
The program is open to people of all ages and is designed to fit various schedules, offering both morning and evening shifts. Participants will receive training on monitoring protocols and species identification through a mix of classroom and field activities. This will prepare them for tasks such as beach patrols, nest registration, and maintaining the nesting corral and hatchery at Holi Beach. Volunteers will also assist with hatchery cleaning and the release of new hatchlings.
This program offers a meaningful opportunity for citizens to perform community service and get directly involved in conservation. The initiative reaffirms the government’s dedication to preserving one of the region’s most cherished species. Those interested in helping can call 322-160-2637 for more information and to register.
