UPDATE: The campaign in Puerto Vallarta officially starts on Saturday, June 5 at 6:45 am, with a beach cleanup on Playa Holi. Come out and join the city’s efforts to protect marine life and preserve Banderas Bay’s natural beauty.
Puerto Vallarta is joining a nationwide campaign to fight plastic pollution along Mexico’s coastlines. The National Strategy for Beach and Coastal Cleanup and Conservation, launched by the Secretariats of Tourism (Sectur) and Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), aims to remove all plastic waste from the country’s beaches within the next five years.
This effort responds to the alarming reality that over 5 trillion tons of plastic waste pollute the world’s oceans. By targeting Mexico’s coastal areas, the campaign hopes to restore natural habitats for local wildlife and maintain the beauty of beaches that attract millions of visitors each year.
The cleanup will take place in 18 states across 169 coastal municipalities, with Puerto Vallarta among the key locations leading the effort. The official start is set for Saturday, June 5, 2025. Along with Puerto Vallarta, beaches in Progreso, Yucatán; Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo; Acapulco, Guerrero; and San Felipe, Baja California will kick off the campaign. These sites are some of Mexico’s most popular and well-known beach destinations.
Volunteers interested in joining can find registration details and guidelines through the official social media pages of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The campaign encourages everyone to contribute to keeping Mexico’s beaches clean and preserving its natural beauty.
Organizers suggest that volunteers wear light, breathable clothing, bring a hat or cap, apply proper sunscreen, avoid single-use plastics, arrive early, and follow all safety instructions during the event.
This national cleanup marks an important step toward protecting Mexico’s coastal ecosystems and ensuring these natural treasures can be enjoyed by generations to come.
