Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta has introduced a new garbage collection model aimed at improving cleanliness across the city. The initiative, Todos Contra la Basura (“Everyone Against Trash”), takes effect Monday, September 29, following Mayor Luis Munguía’s demand that the concessionaire, Red Ambiental, immediately resolve service problems.
The plan adds 10 compacting trucks and three vehicles for recycling and large-item pickup, expanding coverage to 220 neighborhoods. Of these, 63 will now receive daily service, while 157 will have collection three times a week. Daily service is focused on the Southern Zone and the busiest parts of the Northern Zone, ensuring a high standard of cleanliness in the most trafficked areas of the municipality.
While the schedule for each neighborhood varies, basically, if you are in an area where trash is collected in the morning, it will be picked up before 11:00 am. The evening collection shift start after 6:30 pm. To maintain order, placing trash outside between 11 am and 6:30 pm will result in fines. The city will begin enforcing penalties after a short public awareness campaign lasting one week to ten days.
Mayor Munguía emphasized that the program’s success depends on community participation. “We don’t want mediocre service; we don’t deserve a Vallarta that isn’t clean. We need a Vallarta that shines with its image, and we’re going to achieve that together with the citizens,” he said.
In addition to more frequent collections, the program includes a by-appointment service for appliances, furniture, and other bulky items. Leaving such objects on public streets without an appointment is strictly prohibited.
Enforcement will be managed by the Regulations Directorate in coordination with the Environment and Inspection Department.
“Our goal is not to punish but to create discipline and shared responsibility,” the mayor concluded. “We all want a clean Vallarta, and we’ll achieve it together.”
