Puerto Vallarta is taking swift action to address a growing garbage collection crisis that has left waste accumulating in most of its 300+ neighborhoods. The issue began on December 18, when a new collection schedule – operating every third day – was introduced.
Delays in regularizing the service have sparked widespread frustration among residents and raised health concerns due to odors and unsanitary conditions in neighborhoods like El Pitillal, Versalles, Bobadilla, and 5 de Diciembre.
In response, Municipal President Luis Munguía announced an emergency plan to tackle the backlog. “I have ordered an emergency operation so that Municipal Services and Red Ambiental can work together to regularize garbage collection as soon as possible,” Munguía stated in a social media post.
Javier Navarro, director of Municipal Public Services, explained that the local government has focused on collecting waste in areas not covered by Red Ambiental, the company contracted for the service. He noted that some progress has been made in reducing waste in certain neighborhoods, though challenges remain.
The new collection system, designed to optimize resources and improve logistics, faced significant hurdles in its first week. However, officials are optimistic that the emergency measures, combined with a robust information campaign, will restore the service to normal in the coming days.
This effort is crucial not only for residents but also for safeguarding Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a top destination for national and international visitors during the busy holiday season. Authorities are determined to resolve the issue promptly and ensure a cleaner, healthier city heading into the new year.
