Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In Mexico, Mother’s Day – El Día de la Madre – is celebrated every year on May 10, no matter what day of the week it falls on. It’s one of the most cherished holidays in the country, often compared to Christmas in its importance to families.
In many ways, the anticipation mirrors the lead-up to Mother’s Day celebrations north of the border. Beginning in late April, cities across Mexico – including Puerto Vallarta – start gearing up for the occasion. Stores fill with displays of flowers, perfumes, and chocolates, while restaurants begin promoting special menus weeks in advance.
But, in Mexico, the heart of the celebration is far more personal and deeply rooted in tradition. On the morning of May 10, it’s common for children to wake their mothers with song. Some even hire mariachi or trio musicians, while others serenade with their own voices. Afterward, many families attend a special mass in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a powerful symbol of motherhood within Mexican culture.
Throughout the day, children present their mothers with gifts – cards, sweets, and flowers – and often put on little performances. Whether it’s a song, a dance, or a short comedy skit, these heartfelt gestures are meant to bring joy and laughter to Mom.
Just like in the U.S., families often gather for a festive meal, either at a restaurant or at home. Since May 10 is such a popular date, restaurants are usually booked well in advance. Those unable to be with their mothers on the day often call to express their love from afar.
Here in Puerto Vallarta, the city is adding to the festivities with the Mamá Tucán Festival, taking place at the Lienzo Charro Prieto Ibarría on Friday, May 9 at 5:00 pm. Organized by the administration of Mayor Luis Munguía, the event promises a mix of entertainment and heartfelt tributes, all aimed at honoring the incredible mothers of Puerto Vallarta.
While customs may vary between countries, the love and appreciation for mothers is something that unites us all. This Mother’s Day, whether celebrated in Mexico on May 10th or in the United States on May 11th, let us all remember to shower our mothers with the appreciation and love they so richly deserve.
