Puerto Vallarta to Take Part in Regional Tsunami Drill Nov 4

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Don’t be alarmed if you hear sirens going off and see hordes of people heading for higher ground tomorrow morning. The City of Puerto Vallarta will be participating in a regional tsunami warning drill that’s scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 4th, at 10:00 am, as part of World Tsunami Awareness Day.

Tsunami alarms will sound, Civil Protection teams will be visible throughout the city, and some participating hotels will temporarily evacuate their facilities. The drill is designed to teach emergency evacuation procedures to those who live or work in coastal areas of Puerto Vallarta.

The coordinated exercise aims to evaluate and strengthen emergency preparedness across coastal communities while reinforcing a culture of prevention. Civil Protection and Fire Department teams will be stationed throughout the city, with several hotels, schools, and municipal departments joining in the simulation.

Misael López Muro, Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Puerto Vallarta, confirmed that the municipality is fully prepared for the drill. “Mayor Luis Munguía is aware of and supports the city’s participation, which seeks to promote a culture of prevention and readiness for a possible tsunami,” he stated.

Sergio Ramírez López, Director General of the Jalisco State Civil Protection and Fire Department, noted that neighboring municipalities including Cabo Corrientes, Tomatlán, La Huerta, and Cihuatlán will also take part.

The exercise will focus on teaching evacuation routes, practicing safe movement to higher ground, and encouraging participation from local residents and businesses. Authorities will also continue registering properties and establishments located in areas at risk of tsunami impact to improve future response planning.

By participating in this regional drill, Puerto Vallarta reaffirms its commitment to community safety and disaster preparedness along Mexico’s Pacific coast.
