Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Puerto Vallarta once again demonstrated its dedication to ocean conservation during the second Limpia tu Mar International Trash Fishing Tournament, held on October 19 at Los Muertos Pier. Supported by the municipal government, the event brought together volunteers, local authorities, and environmental organizations to clean the waters of Banderas Bay, collecting an impressive 3.5 tons of marine debris.
Representing the Mayor’s office, Vincent O’Halloran, Manager of Territory and Sustainable City, highlighted the broader significance of the day’s work: “More than 260,000 tons of plastic are still out there [in the world’s oceans], but today we are setting an example. If this is done in every coastal city on the planet, the future and sustainable development of this planet is possible.”
Rigoberto Pedroza Jagger, president and founder of Limpia tu Mar, remarked that “we all take a lot from the ocean, but no one takes out the trash,” describing it as a global issue that Limpia tu Mar is working hard to tackle through ongoing cleanup and awareness efforts.

Recognizing the Commitment of Conservation Allies
The awards ceremony was a chance to celebrate the dedication of the teams that removed the greatest amounts of waste across various categories. These top performers included:
- Sayan Beach, recognized for collecting the most plastic, with 254.9 kilograms of PET.
- SEAT, which successfully removed 69.6 kilograms of glass.
- Buenaventura, honored for its collection of 9.1 kilograms of aluminum.
- The Calavera team, which recovered 10.5 kilograms of Styrofoam and 291 kilograms of general waste.
In the volume category, which measures the overall size of the haul, first place was awarded to Campamento Tortuguero de Boca de Tomates Nakawe A.C. for collecting 269 kilograms.
The tournament concluded on a hopeful and grateful note. Rigoberto Pedroza thanked all attendees, emphasizing the role of the participants as active advocates for the environment. He reminded those in attendance that “The ocean has no voice, but it does have allies,” confirming Limpia tu Mar’s ongoing commitment, alongside its partners and volunteers, to make a meaningful difference in Banderas Bay.
The successful tournament reinforced Puerto Vallarta’s growing reputation as a city actively committed to protecting marine life and promoting environmental responsibility.
