Puerto Vallarta marked a powerful new chapter in its response to addiction with the TUCA Parade and a public forum held on the International Day Against Addictions. Hundreds of residents, treatment centers, and government leaders joined forces to confront an often-hidden crisis.
The event, organized by Mayor Luis Munguía’s administration, showcased a deepening commitment to prevention and rehabilitation. Leading the efforts is the newly created Subdirectorate of Addiction Prevention, the first municipal agency of its kind in Vallarta, headed by Ana Patricia Martínez García. This new office is a testament to the city’s proactive approach to a global challenge that often remains unspoken.
The day began with the inspiring TUCA Parade, which set off from the Sheraton Hotel and culminated at the iconic Malecón Arches. The procession included a caravan of vehicles adorned with prevention messages and representatives from various rehabilitation centers, symbolizing a collective journey toward recovery and awareness.

During the subsequent forum, Martínez García delivered a poignant address, acknowledging that beneath Puerto Vallarta’s appealing tourist exterior, many young people, families, and communities grapple with the profound impact of addiction. She expressed immense gratitude for the mayor’s commitment, highlighting the unprecedented focus on this critical issue.
“For the first time in the city council, there is an area focused on addiction prevention; for the first time, a mayor is interested in this issue, which I am infinitely grateful for,” Martínez García stated. “In just five months, we’ve reached out to treatment centers, spoken with young people, and learned about the needs of over 2,500 individuals currently receiving care. This vulnerable group deserves our full attention.”
Councilwoman Laurel Carrillo, head of the Health and Addiction Prevention Commission, reaffirmed the city’s dedication to this cause. José Guadalupe Barragán, president of Red Rehabilita, emphasized that overcoming addiction demands more than just willpower; it requires strong unity and genuine partnerships to build a healthier, addiction-free Puerto Vallarta.
The ceremony closed with the recognition of newly trained addiction counselors and praised Councilman Christian Bravo Carbajal’s efforts to include people in recovery in beach cleanup initiatives – giving them purpose while helping the environment.
This initiative marks a hopeful shift for Puerto Vallarta, proving that progress is possible when society and government come together to build a healthier, more compassionate future.
