Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Cuale River Island is set for a major revitalization, as announced by Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Munguía during the island’s centennial celebration. The mayor shared plans for a comprehensive rescue and rehabilitation project, committing approximately 40 million pesos from the Tourism Trust to enhance this natural and cultural centerpiece.
The ambitious renewal aims to strengthen the island’s dual role as a natural sanctuary and a public space. Mayor Munguía detailed the investment breakdown, allocating about 8 million pesos for the upper section and approximately 29 million pesos for the lower part, totaling nearly 40 million. This essential funding will be used to improve walkways, reinforce slopes, and create areas that allow residents and visitors to observe the river’s fauna, including birds, as well as the unique flora and trees.
The mayor stressed that the character of the island will be preserved above all else. The goal is to enhance the existing order, not disrupt it, ensuring the island remains an authentic natural corridor. The improvements will focus on providing adequate facilities, such as the placement of new benches, restrooms, and improved lighting and security. Additionally, the project includes new sculptural works to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the island’s paths.

The City and Historic Center manager, Juan Pablo Martínez, further detailed the vision, which will reaffirm the island as a key tourist attraction. The Rehabilitation and Rescue of the Cuale River Island plan includes the creation of a botanical garden and a renewed staircase, aiming to fuse culture, nature, entertainment, and gastronomy while ensuring sustainability and preserving Vallarta’s architectural identity.
The plans feature several new and exciting offerings. The island’s cultural center will host interactive cultural experiences and workshops led by local artisans, teaching crafts like pottery, weaving, and visual arts. Furthermore, the Historic Center Citizens’ Council is looking to collaborate with Jalisco’s wineries to offer unique experiences combining wine tastings with pairings from local restaurants.
A new Farmers Market is also being contemplated, where visitors can purchase local produce and enjoy dishes prepared by local chefs. This lively space may also include cooking workshops and tastings of regional products, such as tequila and raicilla. Local food vendors will be invited to form gastronomic caravans, offering a variety of excellent street food options.
Achieving this impressive vision will require several months of intense work. The rehabilitation efforts will cover the cultural center, the facades of the premises, roofs, paths, urban image, and basic infrastructure. Mayor Munguía has committed to sharing the complete project plan with the residents, ensuring the community is informed and engaged as the Cuale River Island embarks on its promising new chapter.
