Responsible Verification Non-Compliance Sanctions Begin March 1

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Despite the fact that cars whose license plates end with a 1 were required to have their vehicles inspected by February 28, the Responsible Vehicle Verification Center located at Av. Francisco Medina Ascencio 244 in Puerto Vallarta has seen very few drivers complying with the requirement.

As of January 1st, all private vehicles whose license plate ends with the number 1 had two months to carry out the emissions testing and verification process. However, during the first two months of 2023, the station has only inspected between 30-35 vehicles per day.

As of March 1, the aforementioned vehicles that have not completed the verification process, (which costs $500 pesos), may be fined $2,074.80 pesos, although the sanctions will be waived if motorists verify their vehicles within 30 days after being penalized.

The authorities stressed that, in accordance with the provisions of the New Mobility, Road Safety and State Transportation Law, the fines will be applied by the Highway Police, only within Special Operations (checkpoints) in which the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet) and the Comprehensive Agency for Emissions Regulation (AIRE) also participate.

Vehicles with license plates that end with the number 2 are now required to complete the verification process, which must be completed by the end of April to avoid sanctions.

To get your vehicle verified, you must first make an appointment via the official page of the Responsible Verification program. Before starting the process, you must have the following information on hand: Make, model, year, license plate number and serial number (VIN) of the car, as well as your name, address and postal code. After filling out the form, you will make the payment before selecting a date and time to have your car inspected.

Cars that pass the verification process will receive a digital certificate that authorities can check remotely, without having to stop the vehicle.

However, if, for whatever reason, your vehicle does not pass the verification process, a certificate will be issued (that you must produce if pulled over), and you will have one year to correct the problem and have your car re-inspected.
