SEAPAL Pledges September Stabilization of Vallarta’s Water System

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – SEAPAL Vallarta has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and public dialogue, assuring residents that the city’s drinking water system will see significant improvements this September.

In a meeting with citizens who recently voiced concerns, General Director Carlos Alberto Ruiz outlined the works and investments aimed at stabilizing supply. He confirmed that the new vertical galleries in the Mascota River will soon begin operations, strengthening service to neighborhoods in El Pitillal and the northern part of the municipality.

Ruiz acknowledged that intermittent shortages have affected some areas, noting that rapid population growth, aging infrastructure, and power outages have challenged the system. He emphasized that solutions are underway, including the purchase of electric generators to keep wells and plants running during power interruptions.

Operations Director Alejandro Padilla highlighted that SEAPAL managed 55,000 contracts in 2005, a figure that has now reached 90,000, while water production has not expanded at the same pace. He encouraged residents to maintain cisterns or storage tanks, a common practice in many cities worldwide.

Despite these challenges, SEAPAL underscored the quality of its supply. The water is certified by COPRISJAL and monitored through internal and external testing. Four treatment plants, particularly Cerro del Machete, ensure safe drinking water by removing elements like iron and manganese. Residents were urged to report any abnormal coloration for immediate review.

On the subject of the recently approved 8% rate adjustment, officials explained that rising operating costs made the increase necessary. Producing one cubic meter of water costs 27.06 pesos, while minimum household users pay just 11.55 pesos thanks to subsidies. The adjustment will also fund further investments in infrastructure.

Throughout the meeting, residents shared concerns about pressure levels, intermittent service, and cloudy water. Ruiz reassured them that SEAPAL remains an open-door organization committed to addressing community needs through ongoing dialogue and long-term solutions.
