Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico – The “Trees from Plaza to Plaza” program, an inspiring initiative spearheaded by the Luis Munguía administration’s Environmental Sustainability Directorate, has seen remarkable success with over 200 trees finding new homes in the city. This widespread adoption underscores a growing commitment to environmental enrichment among Puerto Vallarta’s residents.
Since its launch in June, and continuing through the rainy season until September, the program has captivated citizens with colorful and informative stands in various public plazas. These stands offer a wonderful opportunity for residents to adopt a tree and actively participate in the city’s greening efforts. Among the popular species adopted are starfruit, nancy, guava, amapa, and primavera, each adding to the biodiversity of the region.
Tahamara Esquivel, who leads the Environmental Sustainability Directorate, emphasized the core mission of this endeavor. “The primary aim of the Árboles de Plaza en Plaza program is to champion reforestation, encourage tree planting, and foster environmental stewardship throughout our city,” explained Esquivel. “We want to ignite citizen participation and heighten environmental awareness.”
Upon adopting a tree, citizens receive comprehensive information regarding its species, proper care, and management recommendations. This educational component ensures that each adopted tree thrives in its new environment. Participants also sign a form, formally committing to the care and maintenance of their tree, reinforcing a sense of personal responsibility.
The Trees from Plaza to Plaza program is a testament to Puerto Vallarta’s dedication to a greener future. By actively involving citizens, the initiative is not only boosting reforestation efforts and tree planting but also cultivating a stronger sense of environmental awareness and responsibility within the community. This program truly exemplifies how collective action can contribute to the lasting beauty and sustainability of the city.
