Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico – On April 14, 2025, the Tren Maya launched its first-ever express service between Cancún and Mérida, offering a faster and more efficient way to travel across the Yucatán Peninsula. This new non-stop route, Train 307/308, shaves off about 30 minutes from the usual travel time, opening the door to quicker journeys between two of the Yucatán Peninsula’s most visited cities.
Unlike the standard route, which makes six stops and takes just under four hours, the express train skips all intermediate stations. By streamlining acceleration and deceleration and removing stop times, the trip becomes more direct and convenient.
The express still uses the same X’Trapolis Tsíimin K’áak trainsets, currently running on diesel with a top speed of 142 km/h. Once electrification is complete, that number could climb to 160 km/h, promising even shorter travel times in the future.
Alongside the new express route, Tren Maya has also increased service frequency on other key lines, including Cancún–Tulum and Bacalar–Palenque. These improvements aim to strengthen regional connections and support easier access to major cultural and historical landmarks.
The Tren Maya project stretches across 1,554 kilometers and five southeastern Mexican states: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. With 34 stations – 20 of them major hubs – the railway links key cities with ancient ruins, national parks, and small communities. Operated by the Mexican Armed Forces, the project is designed to boost tourism and regional growth while honoring local traditions and heritage.
Passengers can choose between Tourist and Premier classes and buy tickets online or at station kiosks. Each station is designed with comfort in mind, and ongoing improvements aim to make travel even more accessible.
